Now that we know what a wiki is and why you should use MediaWiki, it’s time to learn how to install MediaWiki on your server.
How To Install MediaWiki with Softaculous
The Softaculous installation is by far the easiest way to install MediaWiki on your domain.
- Log into your cPanel
- Under Software select Softaculous Apps Installer
- Search for “MediaWiki” or select it under Wikis
- Click Install Now
- Select the domain for the installation
- Fill in the site configuration, admin, language, and other options as necessary (see chart below for more information about options)
- Click Install at the bottom of the page when ready
Overview of Options
Wiki name | The actual name of your wiki, like “Wikipedia” for example |
Wiki email | The desired email account for administrative purposes |
Admin username | The username that the administrator uses to log in |
Admin password | The password for the admin account |
Select language | Choose your desired language |
Uploads | Whether or not to enable file uploads to the site (can be updated later) |
Database name | The name of the database to be created, where all site data is stored |
Table prefix | A custom prefix applied to tables in the database (may be helpful to change this) |
Disable update notifications email | Check to disable email notifications about available updates |
Auto upgrade | Choose your auto upgrade preference for new versions of the MediaWiki software |
Backup location | Select a desirable location for automatic backups |
Automated backups | Select whether or not you would like to run auto backups |
Backup rotation | This determines how many backups you would like to save before older backups are overwritten for new ones |
