How to Cancel your Domain Registration

Domain names are automatically renewed after registering them through us. However, you may find a time when you no longer need one and want to cancel it. You may be changing names or building a new site altogether. In this guide we will show you how to cancel a domain registration from your AMP.

Note: Domain names are often renewed up to 2 weeks prior to their expiration date and are NON-refundable. Be sure to cancel your domain name before the two week window to ensure it cancels properly.

Cancelling a Domain Registration

  1. Login to AMP.
  2. In the main menu, move your mouse over the Billing option, and click My Subscriptions.

  3. Find your domain on the My Subscriptions page, and click the “X” to the right.

  4. Confirm you want to cancel your domain registration on the next screen by clicking the Submit button.

You will then see a message stating “You have cancelled your Domain Registration subscription.”

Congratulations, now you know how to cancel your domain registration from your AMP!

  1. I cancelled my domain subscription but I’m thinking about uncancelling it (It doesn’t expire until August). I there a way to uncancel my subscription?

    1. Hi JP,

Thanks for considering to un-cancel the subscription. The best way to do that is contact our Customer Service team (contact information at the bottom of the page). They can take care of any billing changes.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

    1. Hello Meadowcountryside.com,

  4. Okay — reading through this thread, are you saying that once a domain name goes into the Redemption period — say the domain name I’m using on my site, I can re-claim it and do with it what I want — like park it?  Would I have to buy it from Inmotion or do I already own it and I just have to pay a yearly registration fee? Sorry for such novice questions, but I made the website a few years back and life got in the way and I never used it and have no intention of using it at this point, so I’m actually thinking of selling it if I can.  Hope this makes sense — and thank you in advance.

    1. Hello Peggy,

Thank you for contacting us. Yes, if your domain is in a redemption period (typically about 100 days), it is still possible to keep or “redeem” the domain before it is released to the public.

The redemption fee is higher than a normal yearly registration, since the domain has already essentially expired.

Once you have redeemed (reclaimed) your domain, you can park it, and pay regular yearly renewal fees.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  5. On my domain subscription screen, the cancel field says set to expire. Does that mean it will not automatically renew?

    1. Hello Leroy,

Thank you for contacting us. Yes, this means instead of auto-renewing the domain, the domain will expire instead.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  6. Hello Milo — I have 2 domains registered with InMotion. I’d like to cancel one registration and register it with another hosting service (as I’ll be using their website creation tools). How do I do this? Thanks, -A

  7. If I wanted to register my domain name to another service, would I be able to within the first thirty days? Thank you!

    1. Hell Milo,

I’m not quite sure what you mean. You are unable to switch registrars within the first 60 days according to ICANN’s rules. However, you can change the data on the domain (owner, registration info, etc) whenever you like.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

    1. Hello Milo,

Thank you for your question about when a cancelled domain will become available. Typically, 30 days after a domain expires, it goes into a Redemption period. You can look up a domain’s expiration date in the Whois record.

The Redemption period usually lasts about 100 days and allows the owner to re-claim the domain before it is released to the general public.

So, as a general estimate for how long it will take for a domain to become available to the public is 130 days.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.
      Thank you,

      -John-Paul
