Joomla 2.5 Editor

Joomla 2.5 has reached its end of life as for 12/31/2014. Please be advised this may be a security risk to your website. You can view more information about the end of life here.

In this article we’ll elaborate more on the phrase Joomla 2.5 editor. There are different types of editors, and there are different things you can edit.

Joomla 2.5 Editors

There are three types of editors available, and each type offers a different way of editing content.

WYSIWYG Editors

WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editors show you what your content is going to look like when published. For example, if you bold text in the editor, you know it is going to be bolded text when you publish the content. The default editor in Joomla 2.5 is a WYSIWYG editor named TinyMCE. You can find several articles on how to use this editor here. In addition to TinyMCE, JCE (Joomla Content Editor) is another popular WYSIWYG editor available for Joomla 2.5.

HTML Editors

HTML Editors make it easy to edit directly the HTML of content. Each HTML editor can have its own unique advantages, but the most popular two are:

  1. Auto Closing tags: Auto closing tags helps prevent you from not closing important HTML tags. For example, when you start a new paragraph with <p>, the editor will automatically add the closing </p> tag.
  2. Code Highlighting: When you’re dealing with so many tags, at times it can be very easy to lose your place. When code is highlighted, tags are highlighted in different colors, helping you distinguish where tags are started and ended.

Text Editors

Text editors are straight forward. There are no bells and whistles, no shortcuts, just a simple editor. Click here to learn how to use the Text editor in Joomla 2.5.

Types of content to edit

When using an editor, you’re obviously editing something, but what? Within Joomla 2.5, you’re usually editing content (such as an article or category description), or you’re editing a template.

Article Editors

The most common text edited is content. Content includes things like the text within articles and category descriptions. WYSIWYG editors are most commonly used, and HTML editors are generally used by more advanced users. It is rare that standard text editors are used.

Template Editors

Joomla 2.5 includes a Template Editor. As it highlights PHP syntax, you can think of it as an HTML editor (although it is still a very basic editor). You can find more information here on using the Joomla 2.5 Template Editor.
