How to enable SSL in PrestaShop 1.5

After installing and configuring your PrestaShop 1.5 you may want to make some areas more secure. To do this, you will want to enable the SSL for your PrestaShop 1.5. This allows you to make certain areas, such as order processing or account information areas, more secure.

To enable SSL in PrestaShop 1.5:

  1. Log into your PrestaShop 1.5 dashboard
  2. Using the top menu bar, hover over the Preferences tab and select the General option.
  3. From the Preferences : General page, find the Enable SSL option. If you have an SSL installed on your account for the PrestaShop 1.5 domain name, you will be able toclick on a Yes option here, turning on the ability to use SSL on specific pages.
  4. Click on the green Save button in the upper right corner to save your SSL configuration.

You have now enabled SSL for your PrestaShop 1.5 store.

  1. John-Paul,

    Thanks for your answer!

You said: “Forcing SSL on alI pages, does modify the .htacces file, but still does not use a 301 redirect. Redirecting your product pages, or the whole site without a 301 redirect, could possibly cause an issue (but only Google would know).”

Since posting, I went and found this website: https://redirectdetective.com/

When I run any of the versions of my url it lists all versions redirecting using a 301 redirect, which is what I’m suposed to have. I just can’t figure out where that is occuring.

So I guess for now, my drop in ranking wasn’t because of lack of a 301 redirect for changing all of the pages to SSL.

  2. What does Prestashop do with this setting? Does it change the .htaccess file? Does it use 301 redirects?

I’m wondering because I went with “force SSL on all pages” last month and because of that, my search engine results placement tanked miserably. From my reading, if the SSL change is done correctly with 301 redirects it shouldn’t affect search results. I’m worried though that it’s not done this way as I can’t find any 301 redirects referenced in my .htaccess file.

    Thanks!

    1. Hello Seth,

Thank you for your PrestaShop question. This took some time to research, but there is nothing in the guide above that modifies the .htaccess file. So, I do not see any 301 redirect occurring.

I’m not exactly sure how this would affect SEO, since this only redirects users who are signing in or checking out.

Forcing SSL on alI pages, does modify the .htacces file, but still does not use a 301 redirect. Redirecting your product pages, or the whole site without a 301 redirect, could possibly cause an issue (but only Google would know).

I found a post in the Official PrestaShop forums, where they are discussing possible solutions for forcing SSL on all pages. It seems to be troublesome for many PrestaShop users.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.
      Thank you,
      John-Paul
