A 554 email error is sometimes thought of as a catch-all of email errors. It is generally used when there is a generic delivery failure that another email error code doesn’t directly define a problem for.
Some mail servers also use a 554 error even if there is a specific error code that defines what went wrong already.
You should receive a bounce-back message from the server with a variation of email error 554 in the subject, and the body should contain your original message that you attempted to deliver.

Resolving a 554 email error bounceback
Because errors in the 554 series don’t always bounceback for a common reason, they could be either a hard or soft bounce. To better understand soft and hard bounces, and general email bounceback errors you can read why does email bounce, bounceback, or error?
In our example bounce-back error above the reason the message has failed is because an auto-reply was trying to be sent to an account that didn’t exist. So the RemoteDomain.com mail server responded back with a 554 Invalid recipient error.
This post is probably outdated, but I have recieved a 554 Error not listed above, what could it mean?
It sent me this.
“The response from the remote server was:
554 delivery error: dd Requested mail action aborted”
Unfortunately, this is not enough information to advise how to resolve the issue. I recommend reviewing your Exim (mail server) logs to determine more details. If you are a customer of InMotion Hosting, you should contact our Support for further assistance.
Hi guys,
Â
I keep getting this email. It has been for months now. I think it was to do with sending an originla email to a wrong email address and dont know how to make it to stop.
Any help its greatly appreicated! Thanks!
Â
It looks like that bounce back is being caused by spam being sent from that address to a gmail account or being forwarded from that account to somewhere else so it looks like the spam is coming from your email.
Hello everybody!
We have the same problem lately, with using acy mailing pro for our newsletters:
Only yahoo accounts are affected and do not accept although we always have a perfect 9/10 or even 10/10 points in spam testing (from 7/10 it is OK to send your emails).
The bounce message is as follows:
We are happy to help troubleshoot your returned email, but the details did not post correctly. Please repost your bounce message without any formatting. This should allow it to display successfully.
Thank you,

I’m not sure why the line length is getting exceeded because nowhere in that message is there more than 1000 characters without a “return”. I might be missing something else.
I advise submitting this message to our Live Support team. They can verify your account and look more closely at server logs.

with the problem
Hi, Alex!
I’m sorry to see your email is bouncing back with that error. I just sent a test message from my server and received the same error message, indicating that the email account does not exist as a Yahoo user. Further, I did go to their website and filled out the form to create a new account. When I enter that user, the field indicates a warning:
“A Yahoo account already exists with this email address.”
I would recommend reaching out to Yahoo regarding the user: [email protected]’s available services. This does not appear to be an issue that we can resolve for you, I’m sorry. I hope this helps!
Sincerely,
Carlos E
Hello friends,
I used Sylpheed for some years succesfully. Then came a server related crash, I changed, then one more crash so I had to buy a new PC. Installed Thunderbird but had trouble so I installed Sylpheed again. Receiving no problem but every mail I’m sending to distinct persons and countriies is NOT send because of 554 error without any explanation. Can it be that in the first line my address is popping up two times? And there is no way to delete the second one. Since yesterday I’m working with it searching the net, asking people – but unsuccessfully.
Maybe you got an idea.
Thanks
Einar
Einar, I’m sorry to hear that you’re having this issue, but I’m happy to help! I would recommend putting the bounceback message that you are getting into our Bounce Back Parser tool to see if this can help shed any more information on the problem. However, ultimately you will want to contact your email hosting administrators, and likely also the administrators of the server you are trying to send to directly for more assistance with this.
Please assist. This is the second time i have recieved this email return.
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Hello Andreyan,
Sorry for the problem with the email errors. We need more information in order to troubleshoot the issue. Primarily, we need the sender’s address and account information. If you are not an InMotion hosting customer then you will need to contact your email administrator in order to address the issue. Please provide us more information and we can investigate the issue in more depth.
If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.
Regards,
Arnel C.
Hi,
Just today I noticed wom very worrying behaviour on my corporate mail server: As I logged on via Outlook Express I received a slew of bounced ‘undeliverable’ emails. I noticed that the intended recipients were rather randomly distributed over several industries or even private persons, none of whom exists in my address list, and I promptly deleted all those mails from both my Outlook folder and my folder on my corporate server.
When I attempted to send emails later from that corporate email address, I received a mail from ‘System Adminstrator informing me that ‘Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.’ and at the end of the notification was attached the cryptic diagnosis ‘554 Remote recipients limited.’
So my guess is that somehow my email address got hi-jacked to send out spam mail, or, judging on the random selection of recipients, was used to spread a virus.
Either way, I cannot send anything from that email address right now,e somehow except for internal corporate mail, so am I blocked by a generic ISP virus filter?
Thanks
It is possible you are on a blacklist. You may want to contact Live Support with a copy of a bounceback message so they can investigate to see if they can help.
Arn, thanks for the reply, i waited like 30 min and tried again and it did not bounce back, do you think the email went through? maybe there was an issue with the server at Yahoo? Just want to know your thoughts, if i did not receive an error message that the email has gone through, would that be a correct assumption?
Hello,
If the email did not bounce back then it most likely was just a temporary issue on Yahoos’ servers.
Best Regards,
TJ Edens

Hello Manikandan,
Sorry for the problem with the email delivery. Basically, we would need more information in order to troubleshoot the issue. Primarily, if you can provide more of the error message AND also the email address you’re emailing from, then we can try to test it on our end if you are InMotion Hosting customer. The error message is normally a part of the bounce-back. If you could provide a copy of the entire bounceback (or at least the email header), then we can try to see if there’s more information provided by the mail server that refused your message.
If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

We are getting this error when trying to send. Any hints? GoDaddy claims we are not on thier blacklist, but everything I’m seeing would lead me to believe we are. Any hints?
An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: p3plsmtpa09-08.prod.phx3.secureserver.net ESMTP No Relay Access Allowed From 75.133.76.106.
You may check to see if you are only getting this message from attempting to send to one recipient or to many. If it is just one then it is likely an error on their end. Judging from similar errors I have seen they sometimes resolve themselves.
Hey John-Paul,
Thanks so much for taking the time to educating me about my 554 error message.
Can you help me understand in that very long, greek-sounding error message what told you it was a possible grey listing issue?
or in general, how to distinguish an email with 554 error message was received on other end vs when completely denied?
Thanks,
Denise
Hello Denise,
John-Paul was giving an educated guess on the greylisting. 554-Denied are pretty general in that they do not give a lot of information like the other 554s may. While John-Paul may be correct, I believe that this email was denied for an unknown reason. Unfortunately, the only way to be sure of the reason would be for someone on the receiving end to take a look and then tell you what their server log says.
Kindest Regards,
Scott M
Hello Denise,
Thank you for contacting us. In addition to what Scott has stated.
Specifically, the following lines provided the information:
SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data: 554 Denied
Here is a breakdown:
“SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data” – This means the error is coming from the “remote mail server” meaning the recipient server. The “end of data” indicates it completed sending the mail data to that server.
554 Denied: This error is coming from the recipient server, meaning the server you are sending to. Since error messages can be customized on each server, they would have to look on their server to get specific clues into what exactly triggered the error message.
I suspect a greylisting, but it could also be blocked for other things such as suspicion of being spam. You may want to check the content of the email and ensure it does not contain too many spam words.
Thank you,
John-Paul

Hello Denise,
This means your email is being delivered successfully to the recipient server, but it is being denied with a “554 Denied” error.
This could be a possible Greylisting. Typical messages due to greylisting will usually refer to an email message being “deferred.” Greylisting is a methodology utilized by some mail servers to deter spam. If you send a message to a server that uses greylisting and you are not on that server’s whitelist the receiving server will “temporarily reject” that message and will often return a message that is formatted very similar to a bounce back but will list the error as temporary instead of permanent. The sending server will attempt to resend the message at a later time, but the recipient will experience a delay in receiving the message. The best way to avoid greylisting is to ask anyone who uses greylisting on their server to add you to their whitelist so they can receive messages from you without delay.
Thank you,
John-Paul
Thank you timothy_s, I’ll tell you the whole story maybe you can help me more. This is a friend of mine’s email, he signed up with [email protected] to Dropbox and got some pictures there, and then I don’t know how, but he’s got another email at Yahoo, [email protected] ( actually I’m not sure it’s another). What happened is that he forgot his Dropbox passwod, and when we requst a password reset, if we but in the email field “[email protected]”, Dropbox doesn’t accept it saying that it’s not in their database, and if we but “[email protected]”, Dropbox gives a message that an email has been sent with further instructions for reseting the password. When we want to sign-in to Yahoo, whatever we write in the email field whether “[email protected]” or “[email protected]” or just “moktarmilad13”, it leads to the same inbox and what hapens next is one of two, mostley we get the above messege mentioned in my previous post, sometimes though, a message from Dropbox does arrive with a botton to reset the password, but when we click on it, it leads to a page where a Dropbox message says that “That reset key has expired or isn’t valid”. Now this is driving me creazy, I don’t know anymore if this “[email protected]” does exist or what did Yahoo exactly do to their sevices or what we should do. Please tell me your opinion. Thanks

Your error is pretty straight forward. Yahoo responded saying the user [email protected] does not exist. You need to check to be sure that the email address is correct. There’s nothing more to do to solve this error.
When trying to deliver your message, the mail server at host encountered problems with the following addresses:

This states that the email was not able to be sent to an outlook account. It may be refusing email from your mail server due to spam complaints. However please make sure you are using DKIM/SPF as they can help prevent these emails to fail. I would also suggest contacting your host to see if they can do anything on their end.

While Yahoo has not provided a specific reasoning as to why the email is blocked, it could potentially be due to a blacklist. If sent from an InMotion Hosting server, I recommend sending the bounceback within a ticket to technical support for further investigation.

Hello Vivek,
The message you provided indicates that the IP address of the server you are sending from is in a blacklist checked by the recipient. You will want to alert your mail provider to let them know their IP is in a blacklist so they can work to get it removed. You may want to provide them with the full bounceback message you provided here.
Kindest Regards,
Scott M
