Mail Delivery Failed: Returning Message to Sender

So, you sent an email and it was returned or bounced back to you with a message like: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender

Errors like this are generally encountered when there is an issue on the recipient server, or the intended recipient does not exist on the remote server. It could also be caused by a blacklisted server.

The bounceback message will have this error in the subject, and the body of the message should contain the original message that was attempting to be sent. If you know how to review these emails, they will typically tell you what the issue was. For example, the below bounce specifies:

The following address(es) failed: [email protected]

We understand it can be difficult at time to review the full contents of a returned email message, so we created the following tool to help pull the important information for you.

As an example, here is an email that was returned to the sender with the headers included.

What Caused this Returned Message?

In the bounceback example above, the cause of the issue is that this user has WordPress setup to allow comments on posts. A spammer attempted to leave a comment on one of their posts and the WordPress administrator of this site has set up their e-mail account as [email protected]. So that is theaddress used to send comment moderation requests to. However that e-mail address doesn’t exist on the RemoteDomain.com mail server, so it’s always going to fail and cause a bounce-back error.

Typically these types of bounceback errors are hard bounces, meaning that trying to send the message again won’t be successful. You can read our previous article on why does email bounce, bounceback, or error? for a more in-depth explanation of a hard bounce.

Resolving Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender bounce-backs

Since these are due to multiple reasons, the solutions can vary. Below are the most common solutions to getting your email delivered successfully:

  • Check the spelling of the email address for typos
  • Check that the person gave you the correct email address
  • Remove special characters from To or Subject field
  • Create the email account that is receiving/sending mail (if you host it)
  • Make sure your domain did not expire (you can see the expiration in the WHOIS record)
  • Ensure your MX records are pointing to the correct mail server
  • If you suspect a blacklisting contact Live Support

Since this error can be caused by server issues it can be helpful to ask the person you are sending to if they are having any other related problems.

If you happen to also be having issues with WordPress comment spam causing bounce-back errors for your account, we have an advanced article on WordPress comment spam clean up that could help you clear this issue up.

  1. Over the last few days I’ve been receiving thousands of emails (up to 30 a minute!) which are, apparently, being returned to me undelivered. (The usual ‘Mail delivery failed’ message displayed in the ‘returned’ emails.) The thing is, I didn’t send them!

Based on the fact that I use Apple products (Mac, iPad and iPhone) Inmotion (who host all my services) is telling me to contact Apple to resolve the issue. The ‘returned’ emails are arriving on the Inmotion server without any involvement of the Apple products I use.

    Awful customer support from Inmotion.

    1. Hi Ian, sorry to hear that you’re running into this problem.

It sounds like another computer somewhere is spoofing your email. That computer is attempting to impersonate you, those deliveries are failing, and you are receiving a notification regarding it.

It sounds like your DMARC record is set up to alert you when such an event occurs. This can be helpful in alerting you to a problem or situation if it happens once or twice, but I know it’s inconvenient when you’re getting this many messages.

Please follow the guide linked above and adjust your DMARC to either not alert your email address, or to send those notifications to a different email you’ve set up for that purpose.

Since you’ve probably got another mail server attempting to impersonate your address, I’d also suggest that you double check your SPF records. Make sure that the IP address you send mail from is the only one authorized for sending from your address.

If the spoofing persists, be sure to check the mail logs and confirm that no devices on your network are attempting to send these messages. That’s unlikely — in most situations like this it’s a completely unrelated, hacked device somewhere trying to spoof thousands of different email addresses, but it’s still good to double check for the sake of security.

In situations like this, I know spoofers can be a tremendous inconvenience, so I hope those tips help you resolve the issue.

  2. This article has nothing to do with resolving the mail delivery error. It suggests ways of preventing it happening in the future but nothing to help in stopping these error messages being bounced back to the sender. I know they will only occur for a few days but there is nothing, anywhere on the internet, that explains how to stop this occurring in the first place. Fair enough, you got the sender’s email wrong, so what does it keep on trying to send it?

  3. Hello,

What exactly does this mean… I keep trying to send out an email and this keeps coming back! please assist to answer ASAP!

    1. I recommend you ensure the recipient email is correct, check for other issues with your sending account, contact Live Support, and notify the recipient of the issue from another contact method.

  4. I sent an email. recipient[at]RemoteDomain.com in your example. It bounced, incorrect address. I check, it should be recipients[at]RemoteDomain.com

I am using the browser interface to gmail. I expected this article would address my question, since it doesn’t you might ponder it.

In sent mail, I have the email fro someone’s mailer-daemon, not the one I sent to recipient[at]RemoteDomain.com

    1. Hello and thanks for contacting us. I recommend you contact our Live Support regarding your issue. There may be a forwarder in place somewhere.

  5. We are getting a very strange Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender.  In each case the recipient received the email and the returned email lists a very different email in the text than intended recepients email.  The content of the returned email is the same as what we sent so seems not to be spoofing, but is it somehow that our server is sending a duplicated of the email to some unknown address? For example below is showing and address pmbotto**@gmail.com.  The recepient has confirmed that they don’t have such an account or a forwarder to this account.  The others received today have different gmail.com addresses as well and on follow up it is confirmed that there is no reason that account would receive a copy of the email that has been sent.

    1. This may indicate that spam or malware is originating from the email address. I recommend changing the email password for the “operations@” email address. Also,
check all the computers and devices that use the “operations@” address for malware and viruses.

  6. That’s exactly what Block Sender does. When you block someone they’ll send a bounce-back to that person so they think your email address doesn’t exist anymore. Worked pretty well for me when someone wouldn’t stop bothering me with their emails.

    Hope this helps.

    1. If you are getting thousands of bounce backs for emails you did not send then it is likley someone is spoofing your email address or has gained access to it, I would recommend changing your password ASAP and contacting support for whoever is hosting your mail to so they can see if it is actually sending from your account or not and take whatever action is needed to stop it.

  9. Hello, On Roundcube I seem to be having a sporadic issue. Sometimes, when I reply to an email, it bounces back. So, the issue isn’t with the email address because they’ve already sent an email to me. When I retype the address onto a new email (not a reply email) it still bounces back and I resort to sending business emails through my gmail account. This is the message I get:

No action is required on your part. Delivery attempts will continue for some time, and this warning may be repeated at intervals if the message remains undelivered. Eventually the mail delivery software will give up, and when that happens, the message will be returned to you.

    1. You will want to contact the Live Support team so they can look into this for you. They should be able to see if your server is sending the emails or you are merely being spoofed. They will have a method of correction either way so you can help prevent this from continuing.

  12. Can you please explain this message.  I have been trying to track down this problem for awhile.  It happens to several people randomly.  I’m thinking it’s in our network.

    1. Since the second message mentions your DKIM record, ensure you have setup SPF Records and Domain Keys (DKIM) for your domain.

I also recommend setting up DMARC records. This allows you to specify how mail servers should handle messages from your domain that do not have valid SPF and DKIM records setup. Since the DMARC standard is used by many email providers (such as Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, Outlook), it can increase your chances of email being delivered successfully.

      Thank you,

    1. Do you have the full bounceback message. There’s usually a section in the bounceback that explains why the message bounced and I’m not seeing it here.

  16. Hey Arnel.

Thank you SO MUCH! So, this was not a result of a virus or a hacker? It was just the recipient I was sending it to, their inbox is full and cannot recieve emails at the moment, correct?

    1. Hello Alex,

That is correct. When there is an error in mail delivery service it is normal to see a bounce-back message like this. These messages tell you why the mail delivery didn’t work.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  18. What I have received from their support.

“The ticket that was submitted for [email protected], regarding the email related issue, requires further information to process the support request. It has been determined that the bounce back message you provided was not generated by our mail server. Please advise the customer that the issue should be investigated on the sender’s side. If the sender’s email provider insists that the issue is on our side, please ask them to provide remote server logs indicating that connection to our MX failed.”

  19. Thank you Arn for your help. I will do as you have instructed and hopefully get this resolved.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Hello Roy,
Sorry for continuing problems with the email. I looked at the history of the account, and there was previous problems with queued items with ntelos. com. Though this was noted 13 days ago, there still appears to be an issue with sending mail to Ntelos . I tried with a test from the server and this is message I immediately received:

R=lookuphost T=remote_smtp: retry time not reached for any host after a long failure period

I highly suggest speaking with Ntelos to see what’s going on. We can provide the error messages if necessary (though the main one is the one I’ve shown). This will require the attention of the Ntelos email administrator. Please contact them with the information you have provided and see if it is possible to clear the queued items, or if there is another problem.

Apologies again for the problem with the email. If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

  21. Hi,

Since yesterday, when someone sends me an email to [email protected]  they receive a mail delivery failed message, but I do receive their email. See below the message

*removed by moderator for identifying information*

    1. Hello Renato,

If you are one of our customers, you may want to check with out Live Support team to see what is wrong with your specific account. That is not normal server behavior.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

    2. it seems that your local IP address 198.1.82.190 does not have a valid reverse DNS in which your mail has been authenticating.

So kindly contact your local internet provider to add the valid reverse DNS else try with any other internet provider.

    3. Hello saravananct,

Thank you for contacting us. Since we do not own that IP address we cannot setup the reverse DNS for you. I recommend contacting your host, so they can assist you with this configuration.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

  22. HI

    🙁

    Sara

    1. Hello Sara,

Can you please provide the headers of one of the bounce back messages so we may decipher what the issue at hand may be and possibly a resolution.

      Best Regards.
      TJ Edens

  24. Hi,

Thank you for the suggestions.  I had tried “add that particular address to the blocked list”, but it didn’t work.  I’ve resolved the problem now.  It was a scorpion virus. I had to pay Norton $99 to uninstall/reinstall Norton antivirus and change my password.

Again, thank you for your suggestion.

    1. i made a image of my windows and ever so often i reboot from it and delete my window the only problem is when i turn it off it does updates so am going to have to make a new image with the updates on

    2. take ever thing that want keep off your then reinstall your windows most windows have factory reset on them but when you turn it on it does updates but and these take a bit of time so l made a copy of my windows to a image put on rar and sofware in folders just in case i wanted it on the new machine got a new drive and put it in with the new image then run scans on my old drive to find out if had bad sectors on it or a virus i no it is a bit over the top learning can go tits up this way you never can go wrong
