Bash Vulnerability Patched

Issue:Bash Vulnerability Identifed CVE-2014-6271
Status:All of our custom bash shells have been patched and recompiled across ALL shared, VP node and internal servers.
Who is impacted? Our advanced System Admin Team was actively monitoring the logs of all servers for any malicious attempts to exploit the vulnerability, and we’re confident that no breach or exploitation occurred prior to deploying the patched versions.
Estimated time until resolution:This issue has already been addressed.

What are we doing?

We will continue to monitor the situation very closely. We expect proof of concept (PoC) exploits to be authored and distributed over the next few days. There is also the potential for variants of the original vulnerability, which may require further patching if other attack vectors or methods are found.

Background Information

GNU Bash through 4.3 processes trailing strings after function definitions in the values of environment variables, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted environment, as demonstrated by vectors involving the ForceCommand feature in OpenSSH sshd, the mod_cgi and mod_cgid modules in the Apache HTTP Server, scripts executed by unspecified DHCP clients, and other situations in which setting the environment occurs across a privilege boundary from Bash execution.(NVD)

    1. Just want to acknowledge and thank the inMotion team for being on top of this and applying this patch so quickly. It’s very much appreciated!

    1. Hello Granger,

I double-checked, and yes the dedicated servers are part of the update. As I understand it, the update (although it has been initiated), will take up to 2 days to complete. So, it’s possible that some of the servers are still vulnerable. However, the it will be complete within 48 hours.

I hope that helps to answer your question. Thanks for your patience!

      regards,
      Arnel C.

    1. Hello DC,

Thank you for your question. At this time the vendor has not yet released an update. As soon as they do, it will be applied automatically.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul
