Hello,
I have received a message that there will be a server power down during which the website and emails will be unavailable. Will I lose any emails sent to me during this period? Or will I receive them after the repair works are complete?
Awaiting your reply.
Regards,
Walid
Hi, Walid.
Thanks for commenting! Typically, if an email delivery attempt is made to a server that is non-responsive, there will be a time out error or “soft” bounce. This basically tells the sender, “I tried to deliver, no one answered, I’ll try again shortly.” Then, another delivery attempt will occur after a short period of time. This will reoccur either until the message is delivered (after the server finishes its maintenance) or until it fails to deliver after a longer time period (something like 24-48 hours).
In short, you should still receive your emails, however, they may be a little delayed. Otherwise, senders will receive bounce backs of the failure to deliver accordingly. Your email accounts may not be accessible for IMAP/POP/SMTP connections for your devices to connect during this kind of maintenance though. They should reconnect once the maintenance completes–a power cycle of your device may be necessary if any server time outs persist beyond the maintenance.
I hope this helps!
Sincerely,
Carlos E
