How to Make Shortened WordPress Links with Jetpack

One of the benefits of the Jetpack plugin is that Automattic, the maker of WordPress, is also developer of the plugin. This means that they often address problems that they see as shortcomings within the WordPress application itself, or they at least determine that a feature would be advantageous to WordPress users. One of these options is the ability to create shortened URLs for your posts. This is very important for social media where available space is often at a premium. This article will show you how to activate this feature within Jetpack and give you an example of a shortened URL.

Enabling Shortened URLs in Jetpack

The actual name of the setting in Jetpack is: WP.me Shortlinks. Follow the steps below to enable the option in the Jetpack plugin.

Note that the directions within this article require that the Jetpack plugin is installed and activated.

  • Log in to the WordPress Administrator Dashboard.
  • Click on Jetpack in the menu on the left side of the page. Then click on Settings.
  • In the menu bar at the top of the page, click on Traffic.
  • Scroll down until you find WP.me Shortlinks. Click on the slider to enable it.

That’s all you need to do in order enable this feature! Now let’s take a look at where you can find the shortened URL.

Finding the Shortened URLs in WordPress

Now that you have the option activated, you need to be able to find the shortened URL. Jetpack integrates the option in to the editor. Here are the steps to getting the URL:

You will see a column appear on the right side of the page. One of the items listed will be the shortlink. You can click on the Copy button to copy the URL. Let’s compare these two URLs:

Original URL: https://arnel-io.com/wp1831/how-to-use-jetpacks-two-factor-authentication-for-wordpress/

Shortened URL: https://wp.me/patVhc-84
