Setting up test area for web pages

We now have a live website. I would like to set up a test area so that I can have a copy of either the whole website, or subsets, that I can test with prior to making changes to the live website. Would using a subdomain be the best way to do this? Are there alternatives?
Thanks.

Hello richard.veith@smrresearch.com, Thank you for contacting us about setting up a test area for web pages. There are several ways to accomplish this, but the following is one of the easiest.
  1. Create Subdomain
  2. Password protect the subdomain's folder
  3. Clone your Website
  4. Change the URL in the new test copy to the subdomain (the steps for this will differ based on how you built your site)
Let us know if you have any further questions. Thank you, John-Paul
