file per table mysql

I asked this question once, but I never saw it posted and couldn't find it anywhere. So here goes again: I am on a VPS1000s server. I assume that I can tweak my configuration file (my.cnf) for mysql. I just want to make sure that I am allowed to specifically set the 'innodb_file_per_table' setting to "1" before I go to all the trouble of planning and setting up the tasks that are involved in doing that. I've done it before, so I know the steps and I know that simply setting that config setting to "1" and not doing all the other steps (including restarting mysql) does nothing to existing innodb tables.
So can you please post this?

Hello Kleehsupport,

I did check with the Systems Admin team and they said that you may enable the setting on your server. They do not foresee it causing any issues.

Hello kleehsupport,

Thank you for your question on enabling innodb_file_per_table for your server. I do know that it is enabled by default on MySQL version MySQL 5.6.6 and higher. I will need to check with the System Admin for your specific version. I know you can modify almost anything on your VPS, especially with root access. Once I confirm, however, I will reply here.

Kindest Regards,
