Time Frame for Website Transfer?

Simple CPanel to CPanel transfer of a vbulletin website, when does the request usually start from when I submit it? I need an idea so I can give notice and shut the site down during the move. Thanks! Do I need to perform a cpanel backup before I send the request in?
