I had my site restored last year with Suchuri after a breach. I still see index files with "silence is golden" in them. are they safe to delete entirely?

Hi! I do apologize, but I am only able to access publicly available information and information you provide in the support center, so I cannot give you direct information the hack itself. What you should and should not delete is a question best left to Sucuri and my best advice is to suggest that you double check with them if you are unsure.

That said, those index files that are empty except for the 'silence is golden' comment are not the result of a hack but are themselves a WordPress security feature. Think of them like barring up a door that nobody uses. If you remove those files, you'll actually be opening yourself up to attack by opening the directory up to external access.

WordPress has many unusual quirks to it, but unless you know the exact purpose of a file (like a JPG from a gallery or an old backup) or have been advised by a professional security developer like Sucuri, I would advise against deleting individual files to clear out disk space. WordPress has an unusual, complex site structure and even unexpectedly simple files like the above mentioned "Silence is Golden" can serve a purpose.
