Which DNS nameserver to use?
A friend heard that we were starting a non-profit and wanted to grab the domain name, so he did it for us on GoDaddy. Yesterday I asked him to point the nameservers to InMotion and sent him a link of instructions. But I didn't send him the actual nameservers to use (because I didn't know them.) Today I was documenting things and noticed that he used ns1.servconfig.com and 2. I just happened to have the InMotion DNS and Nameserver help page open and it looks like he should have used ns1.inmotionhosting.com and 2 because we're just a non-profit on shared hosting, not a reseller.
He says that he followed the instructions he found and everything seems to be working fine with the "wrong" nameservers. Should I change them to match the documentation that I found or leave it or does it even matter?
Hi Brian, and great question.
Both of the name servers ultimately resolve to the same place, they just go through different URLs and use different IP address.
Someone operating as a reseller may not want to have our brand name listed under domains they are reselling. We offer the reseller name servers for that purpose.
It's no problem if you want to leave the domain pointed to the reseller nameservers since it's already working. Hope that helps!
