DNS setup for redirected domain

A particular account I manage has one website on InMotion (let's call it myorg.com). There are also two other domains that redirect to it: myorg.org and myorg.net. I just discovered that the DNS for those two redirected domains is elsewhere (the former registrar before I transferred the registrations to NameCheap recently). I need to fix that.

I know I need to change my settings on NameCheap to point those two domains to InMotion's nameservers. But then what? I know how to do 301 redirects in .htaccess (or have cPanel do it for me), but I don't know the correct DNS records. Do I just make an A record for each one with the same IP address as myorg.com, or is there more to it? Or is there something automatic in cPanel to set that up? I noticed that cPanel offers something called Aliases, but I don't know what that actually does.

Hi OsakaWebbie,

Thank you so much for your question! After you point the domains to our nameservers, all you'll need to do is add the domains (either as addon domains or as aliases), and then create a redirect in cPanel. You can always manually edit the .htaccess, but it's just as easy to use the cPanel tools to do it for you.

Lastly, if you add the domains as an alias (also known as a parked domain), you would still want to create the redirect because aliased domains can have trouble with SSLs. The only reason you would use an alias with a redirect instead of an addon domain with a redirect is to cut down on the number of domains being used on the account if that is a factor.

I hope this helps!

Kindest regards,

Stormy
