I need help creating a subfolder

I currently have an up and running website. I would now like to switch to a Wordpress platform and will install via Softalicious. I want to build the site in a subfolder so my current site can remain up and running until I am done with the new site. The problem is that I do not know how to create a subfolder. I have searched the support center and am having no luck finding the specific info I need. For starters I need help knowing which directory to open, where to place the new subfolder, and how to name it.

Hello NikLee, Thanks for the question. The reason you're not finding documentation is that it's under a different name. Subfolders on the web server are also called subdomains. I went ahead and added a tag called "subfolders" so that anyone looking for that term in the future can find it using the tags option. First, it's important to understand that you do NOT need to create a subdomain in order to create a subfolder. You CAN simply go to the cPanel File Manager to create the subfolder very easily. First, login to your cPanel File manager. If you're using the default document root location, then your main site will be in the PUBLIC_HTML folder. If you're using a different folder or domain name, then you will need to click on the folder assigned to that domain. In the right panel of the file manager simply right click on that folder and then select CREATE NEW FOLDER. This will create a sub-folder inside of the public _html folder. You can also simply left-click to select the public_html folder and then use the menu system at top. Click on NEW FOLDER to create and name it. What is the difference between doing this and creating a subdomain? The main difference is that a subfolder is only referenced in this manner: http: //domainname.com/subfolder A subdomain can be accessed like this: http: //subdomain.domainname.com If you want to do this, you will need to create the subdomain and then install WordPress selecting THAT subdomain in the drop-down when selecting the domain name. If you want to simply install it in the subfolder without creating a subdomain name, then simply select the installation path with the subfolder name (for example: http:// main-site-name.com/subfolder). This will be the same URL used to access the site - http:// main-site-name.com/subfolder.
