If I'm wanting to create a whole new website complete with wordpress, etc. can I add a domain to my current account or should I really purchase another account?

Your account type can host multiple domains (2 -upgrade to get more). So the answer to your question is , yes you can add a domain to your account and setup a WordPress site with it. As per the link, you will need to add it as an Add-on Domain.
