mysql database connections maxed

Yesterday I found I had a few database tables to repair. After repairing webpages were working fine, but after a short while they stopped responding. Now I see "use has maxed allowed connections" errors in logs and script output. No webpage code was modified so this is something with the servers going wrong I believe.
