After logging into a secure Directory how do I force a user to log out

I recently established username and password protection for a given directory. However, once I log into the directory it appears that I stay logged in indefinitely. How do I log out from the directory? Alternatively, how do I force a user after "x" minutes of inactivity to be automatically logged out?

Unfortunately, this would not be possible for password protected directories. The browser simply caches the information so the only way to log that user out would be to change the password, or the clear all browser data on that web browser.
