WinSCP is a free FTP program you can use to manage your files on your hosting account. WinSCP gives you the ability to upload, download, and modify files on the server. This guide will show you how to Connect Using FTP and WinSCP.
Please remember that if you are on a shared server, you cannot use the SFTP functionality in WinSCP since it requires SSH access.
Connect Using FTP and WinSCP
- Download WinSCP.
- Run the downloaded file to install it.
- Follow the installation wizard instructions.
- Choose “Typical Installation” and click “Next”.
- Choose the “Commander” interface you want to use and click “Next”.
- Click “Install” and then “Finish”.
- Now, you’ll need to configure the settings to connect to the server. Fill in the fields as follows:
Host Name: your domain name
User name: your cPanel username
Password: your cPanel Password
File Protocol: Select FTP from the dropdown (If you are trying to have an encrypted connection, you can change the setting in File Protocol to TLS passive encryption) - Click “Login”.
Congratulations, now you know how to Connect Using FTP and WinSCP. If you need further assistance please feel free to ask a question on our support center.
Tim – You state: “If you are trying to have an encrypted connection, you can change the setting in File Protocol to TLS passive encryption.”
There is no “TLS passive encryption” option in WinSCP. There’s TLS/SSL Explicit and TLS/SSL Implicit only. WinSCP also offers SCP, SFTP and WebDAV, none of which seem to be supported by InMotion. As such there seems to be no encrypted file transfer currently available to InMotion shared-server accounts. I trust that will be remedied with appropriate arrangements and/or documentation.
Hello VN,
If you want to transfer file securely, then use SFTP. Here’s the guide on how to set it up: How to connect using SFTP (Shared Server).

Hello Yamir,
For the hostname you can use the domain name, your account’s IP address, or your server name. Either of the three will work fine.
