Adding a Meta Description Tag

One of the most important Meta tags to add to your site is the description Meta tag. The Description meta tag is what Google uses in their search engine. The paragraph part of the search results is the Meta Description. Below is an example of the meta description code.

<meta name="description" content="This is the description of my website" />

Meta tags must go in the <head> section of your website. Below is an explanation of how to add the meta description to your webpage.

Adding a Meta tag to your website.

For those designing their own site with code you will be able to follow the steps below. For those who are using a program like Joomla, WordPress, or the premium Web Builder, there is a different way to add the description Meta tag. Let go through the steps to add a meta description to your website.

  1. Edit the file that contains the head section of your webpage.
  2. Code view without meta tag

    Find the <title> HTML tag in the the head section.

  3. View of code with Meta tag

    Paste the following code after the <title>tag.

    <meta name="description" content="This is the description of my website" />

    You will need to change the “This is the description of my website” with your webpages description.

    Save the changes.

    Now when your site is found in search engines the description you put will show below the search results.
