AWStats: Unable to update the log error

When updating your AWStats in your cpanel, by using the “update” link found at the top of your AWStats page, you may receive the following error.

Unable to update the log. This message shows Error: Log is currently being processed in the background. Cannot update.

We do apologize for this inconvenience as our Systems Support works on a long-term resolution to solve this problem.

What is causing the error?

The server is scheduled to update Statistics logs from its raw data each night during off-peak hours. As this update is very resource intensive, if at the time of the update, the server load/traffic is above a certain level, the update will skip until the next evening.

What can I do?

If, at anytime, you’d like us to manually update the statistics for your individual account, we’re happy to do so upon a verified request. You can request us to run your stats by contacting support.

Alternative solution – Google Analytics

If you want real time statistics with less interruptions you can use Google Analytics. Google Analytics is a free service by Google that keeps track of all your web stats. Please see the following link for more information on this.

Google Analytics is most recommended for getting your web statistics. Google Analytics is an industry standard that gives you a large amount of information. You can get specific information from specific time periods and includes excellent filtering tools to help you pinpoint exactly the data you need. We do apologize for the inconvenience with the AWStats in cPanel and hope to have a permanent solution to this soon.

  1. Well, that would be unfortunate for me. Logaholic does not work for our account (shared server). All I have is Awstats and latest visitors to monitor who visits, from where and how often. That ain’t much to begin with. Regards google, I don’t care for their tendencies toward privacy invasion and very reluctant to use their stats program, much less take the time to learn how to install and configure it. Just another complication for someone who wants pretty basic stats. I’m not an IT person, and honestly have far better things to do than embark on another learning curve in that area. Sure hope you provide us with some sort of meaningful basic stats program, be it Awstats or whatever.

    1. Hello Steve,

I did check with the Engineers and they said there are no plans to remove AWSTATS or Webalizer stats. As they just re-added the ability to try and run stats from the console, if it hangs, you can certainly contact the Live Support team and they can reset if for you.

      Kindest Regards,

And now one full year later I am having this problem. What gives? Hasn’t updated in three days and I can’t get it to do so manually.

    1. Hello Steve,

Stats programs within the cPanel have been problematic at best for some time. We are currently looking at the possibility of removing them from the server at large since less than 1% of the client base uses it and allowing each individual account to install and manage them on their own. Recently we have started a series based on the Logaholic stats program. I am unsure about the fate of AWSTATS at the moment, however. It would not be a bad idea for us to go ahead and begin the basic article series on that as well in case it is decided to remove that one as well.

Still, we at Customer Community highly recommend the Google Analytics method as it is much more customizable and uses no resources from your account at all. I will check back with the proper people on the fate of AWSTATS and give an update here on this thread.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M
