How to use DNS Management when both registrar and host provide it ?

My registrar is BigRock and they have provided me DNS Management to add/edit A, AAAA, MX, CNAME, NS, TXT, SRV Records and SOA Parameters. Similarly, my host that is you (InMotion Hosting) also has Advanced DNS Zone Editor which provides capability to add/edit A, AAAA, CNAME, SRV and TXT Records.

I observed that InMotion Hosting has already populated the records. But I am confused. I want to know what am I supposed to do at DNS Management of my registrar ? What values should I add there ? Should I add A records there or NS records there ? etc etc or nothing at all.

Please explain to me in detail -
1. The differences of having records set up at registrar and hosting company and which is beneficial considering all the factors.
2. What should be the approach for setting records for those users who have separate registrar and hosting company; so that it acts as a road map for those who encounter this question at some later date.

PS. I have already added InMotion Hosting's Name Servers at my registrar (BigRock) and they have propagated too.

Hello [email protected], Thanks for your question about DNS management. I will try my best to answer your questions: I want to know what am I supposed to do at DNS Management of my registrar? What values should I add there ? Should I add A records there or NS records there ? The DNS for a registered domain name is controlled by one defined source. This source - the authoritative DNS (for the domain) is determined by the name servers. You indicated that you have added InMotion Hosting's Name Servers. If you added it properly, then the domain name's DNS is now controlled at InMotion. DNS settings made at your domain registrar would no longer apply. DNS changes for the domain would need to be done through InMotion's interface. For more information on changing name servers, please see this tutorial. NS records are normally made at the domain registrar if the domain is not registered with our domain registration services. A records and other possible DNS changes need only be done if your domain requires it. Regarding your other questions: 1. The differences of having records set up at a registrar and hosting company and which is beneficial considering all the factors. The differences have to do with the interfaces being used. We use cPanel as our standard server interface, domain registrars will generally have a different type of interface. However, they all do the same thing - they provide a way for the user to make changes to the domain's DNS settings. In my opinion, it would be more be "beneficial" to use the domain registrar with the web host service. If you need to make changes to the DNS due to requirements of a website, then you don't have to go to the domain registrar's interface to make changes, you can make changes immediately in the cPanel interface. 2. What should be the approach for setting records for those users who have separate registrar and hosting company; so that it acts as a road map for those who encounter this question at some later date. If you have users who did not register their domain using our domain registrar, then making the change to use InMotion's DNS service versus the domain registrar's is simply one of choice. If you have many custom changes to the DNS, it might be in your best interest to leave it with the domain registrar. Otherwise, you would need to re-create those DNS changes with the InMotion interface. If there are no changes, then having the convenience of using the advanced DNS editor would be more useful to you as an administrator. If your users insist on keeping control of the DNS, then those users would need to decide on how to point their domain name to our hosting service. The web hosting service and mail service are the two settings that would need to be set to point to us in order fo the services to work properly. I hope this helps to answer your questions! If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know. Regards, Arnel C.
