My email was hacked and is sending out a virus via download. What do I do to fix this?
My email was hacked and is sending out a virus via download. What do I do to fix this?
Hi Mandy! The first thing you will want to do is change the password on this email in cPanel. In many cases, that is all it takes to stop the hacked emails. Make sure you do this on a device you know to be secure and that you use a very strong password.
If that solves the issue, keep an eye on the account and see if it starts doing this again. If so, one of the devices you are using to check the email with may be hacked.
With that out of the way, please be sure to check your mail logs and be 100% sure that this spam mail is coming from your account. You want to be sure that these emails aren't just spoofed emails that claim to be from your domain but are actually being sent from a different server.
Next, be sure you have good SPF records in place to help prevent spoofing.
If changing the password and improving mail security does not solve the problem, there may be deeper security issues on the account. Review/scan the account with the help of your security developer, or use a service (like that offered by our partners at Sucuri) to find any malicious files on your account.
