PHP pecl_http extension available?

I'm on a shared hosting plan and have written some PHP code which uses the pecl_http extension to connect to an external resource. The PHP runs fine on my local system (which has this PHP extension), but it appears to not be available on my shared hosting site. Is there a way to enable the pecl_http extension on my shared hosting site?
