Non-www Redirect to www

I was checking my websites performance on pingdom, and I noticed that there was a 13 second wait when redirecting from mydomain.com --> www.mydomain.com. Is there anyway I can fix this issue? I know most people don't type in www anymore so this will affect a lot of my traffic.
