Google and other search engines will crawl your website to index it and determine your ranking for keywords based on many factors. Also, it's important to understand the two biggest factors you can control to improve your website's rankings are backlinks and content.
Content is important because Google will determine what your website is about based on the keywords it finds. It's important to make sure that your site has unique content (not copied from another website) that is keyword rich. You'll want to effectively use your keywords through out the content.
Backlinks are important (other websites linking to yours) because they establish your website as a legitimate source authority on the information. Backlinks are always best when they are one way links since trading links with other websites is frowned upon.
