How do I upgrade to MySQL 5.5?

I can see that I have version 5.1 on my machine, and I tried the standard command:

[local-host]# rpm -qa | grep -i mysql

to see about un-installing it. But the rpm command came back with nothing. I know where to download the latest mysql, at least 5.5 with SHA2 support, but how on earth do I uninstall the 5.1 from this CentOS distribution? It's integrated somehow and appears to be tightly so because the files are scattered all over the place...

TIA.
