IP Deny Manager error when entering IP addresses

Get this error
IP Deny Manager

Error: while opening /home/xxxxxxx/public_html/.htaccess Error: while opening /home/xxxxxxx/public_html/.htaccess

I can enter these IP addresses in Wordfence - so know they are valid addresses
I get an error of invalid address after I put in the first numbers then the . - then get error Invalid IP
Have I set something incorrectly - since this was working up to 2 days ago when I last entered IP addresses successfully.
